The Tree that inspired this poem, long gone, but still in my head. |
Tree Memory
By Marion
(inspired by Tao Chapter 11)
The absence of my
old Oak tree
is as strong
a presence
as the tree was.
In my memory the
tree still stands.
I sit in its
shade on the
stump where it
no longer is,
dreaming.

Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu - Chapter 11
Thirty spokes share the wheel's hub;
It is the center hole that makes it useful.
Shape clay into a vessel;
It is the space within that makes it useful.
Cut doors and windows for a room;
It is the holes which make it useful.
Therefore profit comes from what is there;
Usefulness from what is not there.

One need not be a chamber to be haunted;
One need not be a house;
The brain has corridors surpassing
Material place.

What now? The majority of my life is behind me, in memory. I swing daily on a pendulum of hope & despair. Despair is so much heavier, though... I sigh...

I have a tree in my memory too..
I can understand the despair. Even within this despair, I can see the shining light of a memory. As you say, the absence is as strong as the presence. I wish you good times ahead. :-)

Ha, my poem today is about a tree too. I love yours! And enjoyed the viewpoint in the second poem, very cool. Great quotes, too.
My favorite place, while growing up, was a branch of a mango tree. When they cut it, I felt they took a chunk of me with it. I completely understand.
The absence is such a strong sense... phantom pains come to my mind
"I sit in its shade on the stump where it no longer is dreaming"....i love that line....a beautiful tribute to the tree and the great significance it has in your memory!
Our minds do not always accept something or someone liked or loved being missing. Clever idea, a missing tree.
