The Way It Is by William Stafford

The Way It Is
William Stafford

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.

*+*+*+*+*+*

My thread:

Jesus, Prince of Peace, Light of the World, Son of God, Healer, Savior…

Our nation needs revival.  God’s Spirit flows from this song. 🙏🏼✝️🙏🏼

Revival. I used to love them as a teenager partly because I was so religious, but also because a great many girls would be there in their best clothes. This left me in the ironic situation of riding high on the spirit of God in one minute and then, a minute later, wishing I could be riding on the body of a girl while at the same time feeling guilty that my thoughts were divided. I was so into Church of Christ revivals, that I not only attended the ones near where I lived, but also in Eldorado, Arkansas; Bowling Green, KY; and as far north as Bloomington, Indiana (I was being groomed for the ministry, so preachers invited me to go with them).. About this time, my father employed an aging black preacher/carpenter named Truly Westbrook (he was born in 1900, so he would have been in his fifties, which, of course, seemed old), and Truly "prophesied" that I would would grow into "a great man of God." I respected Truly himself as a great man, and his belief in me helped me to believe in myself.
