The Ravine by Cyrus Cassells

My peach Canna after a shower last week.

The Ravine
By Cyrus Cassells

In my fifth
holy year on earth,

undeterred,
I climbed out of a corpse-filled,

breakspirit ravine,
clutching the roots of trees

(so beautiful,
the god-tall cypresses,

the grandfather pines
in that part of the Crimea),

and groped my way, gingerly,
toward my twilit village,

the lone, itinerant survivor.
You understand the pull,

the rose light of home
is unkillable.

Everyone says to me--you have such a green thumb.  Look at all of your plants, vegetables, flowers and herbs.  I nod and smile and do not tell them that I have killed many more plants than I will ever grow.  To create life is to experience death.  To live this life, one must persevere.

I'm going to pretend I didn't see that part where you said you'd killed more plants than you'd grown.

Funny thing. We have blooms already all over the "extra" tomato plants we just sort of stuck into a corner of the flower bed when we were carefully repotting the ones that ultimately died!

Unkillable. I laugh because I love that word, the meaning of that word, and yet I'm not even sure it is a word! I can't keep things alive where I live. I blame the valley heat and the unrelenting California sun. But maybe they just die from my inattention. Arrrrgh.

Love you!

You probably didn't kill them. There are other factors. When one of my potted dies despite my efforts to save it, I just figure it was a bad match. Maybe my house is too cool or too dry. I do better when I don't take it on. I just try to make a better selection next time.

I love the photo of the cann.

As gorgeous as your flowers always look, it's hard to believe you ever kill any. I thought I was the only one.:)

Oh the unkillable rose light of home. So beautiful.

Marion, I see that you are one of the unlucky ones (I feel) who has a kajillion of my links (synch-ro-ni-zing) under your comment box. So sorry. This just comes because I have your blog on my sidebar feed. But I believe you can change this pretty easily, if you wish, by going to Settings, Posts and comments, then Show backlinks: Hide.
