When Somene Deeply Listens to You by John Fox

This poem is for my Annie-angel.  Thank you for always listening and never once judging.  I wake up happy just knowing you are in this crazy, fucked-up world....  xoxo

When Someone Deeply Listens To You
by John Fox

When someone deeply listens to you
it is like holding out a dented cup
you've had since childhood
and watching it fill up with
cold, fresh water.

When it balances on top of the brim,
you are understood.
When it overflows and touches your skin,
you are loved.

When someone deeply listens to you
the room where you stay
starts a new life
and the place where you wrote
your first poem
begins to glow in your mind's eye.
It is as if gold has been discovered.

When someone deeply listens to you
your barefeet are on the earth
and a beloved land that seemed distant
is now at home within you.

When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares. ~Henri Nouwen

great tribute to a true friend... some bonds, can't break, some bonds are just plain irreplaceable. I know I cherish mine...in fact, i'm even missing my confidant in life today as she is on the road and we haven't spoken for just a matter of days... so much need be said with all that time passing! :) again, great!

True friends are far between, but we know them with our hearts.

Love your window!

I find this to be a very comforting poem.... and that Henri Nouwen is one of my favorites.

Thanks for sharing the Stanley Jordan clip in your comment at my blog. I have some of his music on my iPod, but hadn't ever watched him before. That two guitar thing is amazing!!!

Yes, how many people really listen without judging. If we have a few people like that in our lives, we're lucky indeed. Love the Oscar Wilde quote!
