The Falcon to the Falconer by Jonathan Steffen

The Falcon To The Falconer
By Jonathan Steffen

Unleash me from your hand
and I will lance the light for you.
I'll cut a swordblade on the wind
and pennant it with flight for you,
to signal I am yours
if you will free me to be true to you.

Unleash me from your hand
and I will mock the sky for you.
I'll pull the anger from the air
and make the breezes sigh for you,
to show that I am yours
if you will free me to be true to you.

Unleash me from your hand
and I will jewel it bright for you.
I'll hunt the treasures of the wind
And pluck them into sight for you,
to show that I am yours
If you will free me to be true to you.
O, cast me from your hand
that I may show my love for you
and throw me to the wind
that I may know my need for you.
All darkness on your hand,
I'm hooded, pinned, and held by you,
O, give me back my wings
that they may bring me back to you.

  2. I've read this one before. I love the last lines, pleading for wings to return by. Another great selection, as usual, Marion! :)

  3. Difficult to do, to let go. I could though...on the tail of such a lush poetic offering. I believe him. He would not have gone far at all.

  8. One of my fave poems.

    The line...

"I'll pull the anger from the air"...

    resonates,
    doesn't it?

  9. This is stirring, especially the lines, "Unleash me from your hand/
and I will jewel it bright for you."

Hope this last week of February sees you well, Marion! We are wrapped up in scarves and jackets here, but lots of sun.

  10. This a challenging poem, Marion! On the one hand, when in love you want to be believe in mutual trust. However, there is a little bribe involved with the falcon: the falconer always rewards the falcon with food as a treat when it returns. Hmmm... Does love have its reward, too? me

One may have a blazing hearth in one's soul and yet no one ever come to sit by it. Passers-by see only a wisp of smoke from the chimney and continue on the way. ~Vincent Van Gogh~ Pull up a chair...
