The Sound of Silence

Oh, for silence & velvety darkness & painless peace---

The most beautiful lyrics on silence ever written. Take a listen.

The Sound of Silence
By Simon & Garfunkel

"The Sound Of Silence"

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.

"Fools," said I, "You do not know –
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you.
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence.http://youtu.be/4zLfCnGVeL4http://youtu.be/4zLfCnGVeL4

They make even more of an impact reading them this way.

This song always comes to mind when my depression rears its ugly head. Hello darkness. Depression is a lonely business because in it we tend to isolate. Such a bitch. But the fight must go on :) Thanks for posting this dear friend. ((Hugs))

oh god, marion. what a powerful song!)) and how true, how alone we each are. and yet simultaneously we remain connected. it seems impossible or contrary and yet both possibilities exist always at the same time. it's a difficult place to be, i think, human and alone. thank god we know (when we allow ourselves to know) of the connectedness too.

and get this. can you believe? i can't! my daughter, my little scrawny long legged daughter who has bloomed into this thunderous she-creature brought home a stack of records from her father's. they were her grandmother's. she slapped down album after album, the doors, the beatles, pink floyd, janis joplin and simon and garfunkle. i had to try not to smile so big. she is headed for the world, through the world of isolation, headlong into the world of connectedness, if only she'll allow herself.

What a great story, Erin! I had a revelation today. Ray said he bought a Jimi Hendrix CD & I replied that I had that entire album memorized because my older sister played it so much (along with all the albums you mentioned). Then it dawned on me that that's where my love of poetry came from: song lyrics. I'd never put the two together before. Your sweet daughter is just beginning her journey...how exciting!!! Thanks for sharing. I love & appreciate you & your writing/photography always, always, always feeds my hungry spirit. xoxo

Such amazingly beautiful words, Marion. I downloaded the song immediately to hear it again. I checked your labels, and I am so sorry, old friend, that you are in such pain.
