The Wind Cries Mary

By Jimi Hendrix, 1967 from “Are You Experienced” Album

After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footprints dressed in red
And the wind whispers Mary

A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterday's life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries Mary

The traffic lights they turn up blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags downstream
'Cause the life that lived is, is dead
And the wind screams Mary

Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past
And with his crutch, it's old age, and it's wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary

I love every song on the "Are You Experienced" album, but this one is a favorite.  Hendrix had no equal as a a poet and guitarist.   If you've never heard this song, you can check it out at YouTube.

What's your favorite Jimi Hendrix song?

My appreciation of Hendrix came in my adulthood. I love these lyrics!

My favorite is "All Along the Watchtower".

I've never seen the lyrics before, Marion, and they really enhanced my memory of this song. Great choice!

I’m a huge Hendrix fan. For sure this is his most poetic and wistful creation. Thanks for reminding me of it.

All the best, Boonie

Hendrix was a rare genius indeed. I, too, love that album (cd? mp3? lol) but i would have to say "Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire" is my favorite. Thanks for posting this lyric. I've heard and loved the song for years, but have never seen the lyrics like this, and it was fun to read.

I recently posted about Janis, and you about Jimi...we need someone to post about Jim Morrison! (I know, I know...the feminist in me has really mixed feelings about hom, but still).

Have a wonderful Labor Day!

It so happens that The Wind Cries Mary is far and away my fave Hendrix track too! Love the lyrics and the laid back vibe in the music on this one. Generally I am not a massive Hendrix fan ... sacrilegious I know! xx Jos

So many Hendrix fans! Thanks for stopping by to comment, everyone.

FB, I own every album ever done by "The Doors" and also two books of Morrison's poetry. He was far ahead of his time, a troubador poet. xoxo

Hanging head, knowing little. What popular culture offers, of course, and what I remember through many murky late University nights, but not enough to have an opinion. But you're right, the poetry is rich in his lines.

(How do you dry gourds? Mine always just rot:)

I just heard a good interview on NPR with one of Jimi's muses. He was amazing! Hard to believe he died 40 years ago tomorrow.
