Grow, Grow, Grow by P. J. Harvey, Perfect Spring Song

GROW, GROW, GROW
By P. J. Harvey
From the CD: "White Chalk"

I sowed a seed
Underneath the oak tree
I trod it in
With my boots I trampled it down

Grow
Grow
Grow

I sowed a rose
Underneath the oak grove
With my boots on the ground
Into the earth I trampled it down

Grow
Grow
Grow

Teach me how to...grow
Teach me how to...grow

Teach me, Mommy
How to grow
How to catch someone's fancy
Underneath the twisted oak grove

Grow
Grow
Grow...

"It is good to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought." ~James Douglas, Down Shoe Lane

"We have descended into the garden and caught three hundred slugs. How I love the mixture of the beautiful and the squalid in gardening. It makes it so lifelike." ~Evelyn Underhill, Letters

"I never had any other desire so strong, and so like to covetousness, as that one which I have had always, that I might be master at last of a small house and a large Garden." ~Abraham Cowley, The Garden, 1666

One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides. ~W.E. Johns, The Passing Show

Ouch, what you say can indeed dig deep into our souls!

I love that last quote. My mind is filled with anticipation of yellow tomatoes. I have a tray of peat pots filled with tiny little plants. I SO hope my anticipation becomes reality. Sadly, reality is so often a brown thumb in my case.

I appreciate your comments, ladies. Yes, our soul is either fertile or barren. There seems to be no in-between...

Kelly, I hope you grow a few of your yellow tomatoes in pots, just in case. I heard on a radio show to put foil around the tomatoe's stems to deter those munching caterpillars. They get one bite of that foil and head the other way! Good luck. Blessings!

These words are beautiful...now if only I could garden! Eeek!

love the words...but music is like anything else, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

And so this year, Marion, we will be planting a new garden and we will nurture it, watch it grow, sustain ourselves from it. Every year it is with hope and a fresh splash of seed that we approach the earth. And late summer when we break the bean to mouth and there is that instant and brief burst of wetness from inside of that solid, I know we've done well.

Yes, Erin. In the darkest, coldest winter nights, I sit depressed and despondent. Then near spring, I get my little hoarded egg cartons, fill them with dirt and plant the seeds and hope once again blooms in my heart and in my egg carton tomatoes. Yes, we've done well. xoxoxo
