Leaves Compared With Flowers & Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost

Fall always makes me think of Robert Frost, the farmer poet, and his wonderous poems. I share two of my favorites of his below. Wishing you sunshine, peace, love and blessings.....

An Autumn fairy checks out a yellow mushroom that sprouted overnight in my pot of thyme.

A last burst of early Autumn Moonflowers.

A simple collage I made last week.

A decoupaged art card from last summer.

Take time to smell the roses before Winter steals them all away.

Leaves Compared With Flowers
By Robert Frost

A tree's leaves may be ever so good,
So may its bark, so may its wood;
But unless you put the right thing to its root
It never will show much flower or fruit.

But I may be one who does not care
Ever to have tree bloom or bear.
Leaves for smooth and bark for rough,
Leaves and bark may be tree enough.

Some giant trees have bloom so small
They might as well have none at all.
Late in life I have come on fern.
Now lichens are due to have their turn.

I bade men tell me which in brief,
Which is fairer, flower or leaf.
They did not have the wit to say,
Leaves by night and flowers by day.

Leaves and bar, leaves and bark,
To lean against and hear in the dark.
Petals I may have once pursued.
Leaves are all my darker mood.

Nothing Gold Can Stay
By Robert Frost

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Marion, who is that woman on the left in the red dress holding that ball? Who is she? She hangs in my bedroom and I don't know who she is. But I love her.

Ok ok, now to read.

I like the contemplation on leaf and flower and bark. I'm more about the leaf, more about the sturdy hand on branch, than the transience and bombastic flare of flower. How 'bout you, Marion?

Hey, and there's transience again, but I live by this transience, the brief, the one marking up against of the other. Just what I was talking about with someone, how my yesterday's melancholy is welcome as it makes today's happiness so much sweeter. It's like that with seasons, too. I am a girl much in need in a change of seasons.

Enjoy the day, Marion!

Beautiful, beautiful pictures! I love the collage; it has me singing, "Let Heaven rejoice and earth be glad. Let all creation sing!"

Next - "Nothing Gold Can Stay" is one of my all-time favorite poems. Now you must post Gerard Manley Hopkins' "Spring and Fall, to a Young Child", my other favorite of similar subject!

Thanks for the intro to "Leaves Compared With Flowers." I'm back up to it for a good study.

Love your site, Marion!!

YOU are worth exploring, Marion! Love it! Frost always evokes a tinge of nostalgia, melacholia, doesn't he? I was thinking also of the wintry poem when the man wasn't going to make it. Nostalgia always touches the heart. The white rose with the pointed petals is exquisite. You make me dream, Marion. xxox

Your roses and moonflowers are still beautiful...and your fairy really does look like she's checking out that mushroom!! Cute!

I enjoyed the Frost poems. I still love his one about the cow and her calf. (I used it with a pic of one of our calves on my 360 blog)
