Morning Glories, A Water Hyacinth & Fireflies Poem

Today the Morning Glories were glorious!

Delywn, I found the name of this plant. I had another bloom this morning. It's a Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes).
Water hyacinth is a prolific plant that floats at the surface of water, its dangling roots acting as natural filters, drawing dirt and suspended debris out of the water for its own nourishment.

This photo is for Carmen the Mermaid who loves hearts.

Fireflies

by Cecilia Woloch

And these are my vices:
impatience, bad temper, wine,
the more than occasional cigarette,
an almost unquenchable thirst to be kissed,
a hunger that isn't hunger
but something like fear, a staunching of dread
and a taste for bitter gossip
of those who've wronged me—for bitterness—
and flirting with strangers and saying sweetheart
to children whose names I don't even know
and driving too fast and not being Buddhist
enough to let insects live in my house
or those cute little toylike mice
whose soft grey bodies in sticky traps
I carry, lifeless, out to the trash
and that I sometimes prefer the company of a book
to a human being, and humming
and living inside my head
and how as a girl I trailed a slow-hipped aunt
at twilight across the lawn
and learned to catch fireflies in my hands,
to smear their sticky, still-pulsing flickering
onto my fingers and earlobes like jewels.

'Fireflies' by Cecilia Woloch, from "Carpathia".

Isn't it interesting that the shape the type makes in the poem is kind of like a light bulb, or firefly bottom? I could have written this, if talent were not required, because it is so much like me...aside from the fact that I don't smoke.

And the pictures, were either there unnoticed or are new. Skinny at 21 and so beautiful at Shhhhh. Hard to tell in the little photos, but it seems like your daughters look so much like your skinny minny picture. Gorgeous the lot of you!

I would love to have tea in your garden. No, let me rephrase... I NEED to have tea in your garden. How's tomorrow at 10:00 :) I'll bring the crumpets, whatever the frick those are.

Annie, I noticed the strange shape the poem made, since I had the photos centered and I just left it that way. Artsy, huh? I haven't seen a firefly since childhood, but I sure could relate to the rest of the poem!

The pictures of me are new. I don't have any very new ones and I only dress up for important occasions, so there you have it. Except at the beach at 21, that was dressed up! Ha! I owned 2 pair of shorts, 2 shirts, 1 pair of jeans, 1 hippie skirt made from jeans and a string bikini and a pair of sandals. I usually lived in the bikini as did most residents of the beach town we lived in. We didn't even own a car, but rode around town on a bicycle. Mine had a baby seat on back for 2 year old April and a basket on front for groceries/laundry. Ah, the folly and freedom of youth! LOL! I'd never have the nerve to do that today!! Blessings & Love!

AJ, it is pretty strong, isn't it?! I like that sometimes. Other times I like it when poets delicately tip-toe around the bush! LOL! Thanks for stopping by! Blessings!

Karen, glad you enjoyed the photos and poem. Purple is my color this week it seems! The Morning Glories are just blooming their hearts out! I was so tickled to see another Water Hyacinth this morning in my little water garden. Blessings!!

I hope not, Rick, because I like her, too! I don't smoke, but my Mama does, and we just sit on her breezeway. I knew you'd love the Morning Glories. I thought of you when I was snapping them this morning in the cool air. They were preening to be so recognized. Blessings & Love, dear friend of my heart...

I was thinking of your post this morning on my way to work (see what influence you have). Actually, I thought of it when I saw someone smoking a cigarette in the next car, and I thought about how I'd said I'm like the speaker of the poem and about how I forgot to say that I don't smoke and about how I wished I had told you that because I don't want people to think of me as a smoker. Then I thought about how weird things have gotten for smokers and about how weird it is that I worry that people I don't know will think I do something I don't do. Then I thought how weird I am to care. And now I think how weird I am to take the time to come here to make sure you know. Jeez, Marion! I think I need a cigarette! LOL

Karen, I get in those moods, trust me, I know where you're coming from. I've never smoked. I'm the only person in my extended family who hasn't. Neither of my children smoke, but my Mama and all of her siblings smoked. I grew up second-hand smoking till I was 18 and got married. I do find it a bit extreme the way people go nuts over smokers. I read a sign at a public place the other day that said, "No Smoking Allowed Within 40 Feet of Facility". WTF is that about? Who comes up with that stuff? LOL! I'm glad the poem got under your skin. That's really good poetry to be able to do that! Ha! Thanks for stopping by. Come and stand on your soapbox anytime. I do it often at my friends' blogs!! Blessings!!
